In 2001 there was a game referred to as a real-time strategy game called Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising. This game featured a great take on the genre that was totally new - you got to take over a unit in first person mode whenever you wanted, and direct it yourself. In fact, you really had to in order to finish the missions. It was awesome - great story, outstanding graphics and production value, and the in-game chatter between your computer-controlled cohorts was second to none (in fact, I don't believe its ever been equalled.)
What do you mean you haven't heard of this one? It's just another in a long line of great games you've never played - and as a result, nothing like them has ever been seen since.
How about my choice for 2005's game of the year - Psychonauts? I know most of you didn't play it - the game didn't succeed financially at all.
How about others? Do you have a 'pet game' that you loved but know that most people missed? If so, let us know!

I would put in a second nomination for Beyond Good and Evil. The game is absolutely fantastic....

Another great game that I don't think many folks tried was Kohan. It really was one of the first new RTS games to change the concept that you churn out lots of little guys, and went with the building of armies. It also got rid of the concept of harvesting resources in favor of a more automated mechanism...

I second the note on the Kohan games--except I would amend it only
to the first two games. Kohan II (really the third game) decided to move away from what made the first two games great and dumbed things down.

I also thought Psychonauts was a great game. I probably never would have played it either, except it showed up on my Tim Schafer radar.
Sometime after playing Monkey Island, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, and Grim Fandango, I instituted a policy to immediately buy and play all Tim Schafer games as they are released. Full Throttle still stands out in my memory as one of the best adventure games I ever played.
